Stone Barn ( part 2)

They didn't stop mixing and pouring for over 36 hours. Frank said the cement would crack if they stopped. The estimated weight of the loft is 75 tons. That's why they keep pouring for 36 hrs.
The barn is 33 X 50 feet the foundation is 2 feet thick and 5 feet deep. The loft is 8 inches thick. Frank named the farm site Castleswor Hill. The water from the well is naturally soft. He had 14 cows and 6 percheon horses for the work on the farm.

The stone house in the Town Chakio own by Smokey Van Kempen was also built by Frank who was well known for his work all over the area. The barn and his house were started in 1923 and finished in 1942.

The barn is located between Morris and Graceville on some back roads..

Tomorrow we will take a great leap ahead in time to the present big milking farms.

This barn was built by my Great Grandfather. It is curently owned by my father. My wife and I plan someday to fix it up and live in it.
It would take ALOT of work but would be worth it.

This barn was also built by my Great Grandfather. My father is Tom's younger brother so we are cousins. I recently visited the stone barn and took many photos and videos with my father telling stories he remembered as a child. I wish Tom the best as the barn certainly deserves the love and caring attention it once had. Thu 21-May-2009 14:41

Stone Barn (part 1)

We were taken by relatives to this stone barn in Mn.

The stone barn was built by Frank Schott and his two sons Bill Sr. and Tony. It was started in 1923. Rock piles from fields and neighbors fields were used for the material along with sand from Lake Hattie. He mixed all his cement by hand, tasting it to know when it was right. This taste test told him when the amount of line was correct which gave the cement it's sticking and holding power. The loft was mixed and poured by the 3 of them. They made a ramp to push to push the wheel barrow up bare footed as shoes were to slippery. More on the construction tomorrow..

God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
I'm quoting that more to myself than to you - today I will work in the children's church for the first time...
